Frequently Asked Questions

General

Should I create a business or an individual account?

It is important that you create the correct account based on the position that you are using the app. If you’re using the app as a business or in the capacity of your business, craft, or profession, then you should create a business account.

If you are using the app in relation to your personal affairs or a personal private matter that is disconnected from your capacity in a business, craft, or profession, then you should create an individual account.

Can I use Facebook to sign-up or login?

Legal Utopia provides you with the option to create or login to an account on its mobile app via Facebook. This allows you to pre-fill the information by sharing your personal information between Facebook and Legal Utopia.

How do I change my password for my account?

Legal Utopia enables its users to reset passwords from login. Legal Utopia does not have access to your passwords and cannot change them for you.

If you need to reset your password, the credentials will be produced for you and you will not be able to set your own new one. This will also only be accessible via the email address that you used for that account, so you should keep this secure. This is to maintain adequate levels of password security for your account.

What does ‘Verify your email’ mean?

Legal Utopia needs to ensure that you have access to the email account that you are proposing to use when creating an account. To verify this, you will receive a link to your email address used when signing up, this will only occur on first signup, and you will need to open that link and then return to the app.

Your new account will not be registered if you fail to verify your email address.

What are you using my personal data for?

Legal Utopia will only use your personal data for reasons stated expressly in its Privacy Policy. When creating an account, for example, your name and email address will be recorded as linked to that new account.

I can’t access anything but my account profile?

If you have recently just created an account, you will not be able to access any other part of the mobile app until you have completed all fields on the account profile. This will usually require you to complete your residential address or business details. Once you have submitted your profile, the app will automatically open up the other areas of the app for you to use.

Can I have a business account and an individual account?

You can create both a business account and an individual account with the Legal Utopia app, however, you will need two different email addresses as you will need two accounts.

It might be most practical to use a business email address for the business account and a personal one for the individual account.

How do I delete my account?

You can delete your account from within the Settings page under the subheading ‘Close your account’. You will need to complete the steps as shown on the screen.

This process will prevent access to your account immediately and it will delete your personal data from our system's records. You should note that this process may take up to 30 days to apply across all system records.

Is it free to have an account with Legal Utopia?

You can create an account, either business or individual, for free and there is no obligation to make a purchase. Some services are also free-of-charge but subject to our Terms of Use.

Other areas or services of the mobile app may be subject to a fee, charge, or subscription.

Is Legal Utopia authorised or regulated to provide legal services?

What is machine learning and how is it used in this service?

Machine learning is a subset of technologies from a wider technology called Artificial Intelligence. It essentially breaks down data into numbers and applies mathematics to generate probability-based predictions on certain tasks that humans would only previously have only done.

One of these tasks has previously been identifying what area of law a client’s legal problem is most relevant to. Legal Utopia uses machine learning to do this without humans having to do it. Machine learning technology is therefore only applied when you input the description of your legal problem to enable it to generate a prediction. This is how machine learning is used in this service.

Why does the service ask me to select a remedy?

The Legal Checker service needs to understand what it is you are seeking as a solution to the legal problem, issue, or dispute that you are currently facing. This can be with a view to your immediate remedy such as Legal Advice or your ultimate goal of Compensation or a Court Order.

What does the service mean by select a ‘role’?

The Legal Checker service needs to understand the capacity or ‘role’ that you play in your problem, issue, or dispute. This might be that you’re solely seeking legal advice at this stage and, therefore, your role would be an ‘Advisory Client’ or you may be seeking to issue a legal claim or action against another, in which case, you may be a ‘Claimant’.

How much is it to use the Legal Checker service?

The credit or subscription options available to you will depend on your account type and your preference. Credit purchases can start from £0.99 and subscriptions from £9.99pm. Please go to ‘Subscriptions’ in-app to check what options are available to you.

What are credits and what do they give me access to?

Credits are redeemable virtual tokens that can be used exclusively on the Legal Utopia mobile app for access to individual results from the Legal Checker service.

Where results from the Legal Checker service are not already free, you will need either a credit or a subscription to access the content.

How does the legal aid assessment work?

Legal Utopia has incorporated into the Legal Checker service the ability for the service to potentially identify a range of qualifying legal problems that may benefit from legal aid assistance. This is automatic and applies to individual accounts.

What do I do if there isn’t an option that is relevant to my problem?

If you are using the Legal Checker service and you are directed to select an on-screen option and none of the options are relevant, there will always be a ‘No’ or ‘None of the above’ option available. You should always select this option if you are unsure or there is not an option relevant to you.

How is feedback used from the Legal Checker service?

Legal Utopia utilises feedback from the Legal Checker service in two ways depending on which form you have chosen or completed. Legal Utopia will use feedback from you to either re-train and improve the machine learning technology that is currently used, or new technologies that might improve the service, or the feedback will be used to understand how Legal Utopia can improve the service itself in general.

Regardless of the feedback submission, Legal Utopia reviews and considers each and every submission.

I can’t continue on the text-box screen when it asks me to explain my issue or dispute?

At this stage of the Legal Checker service you are required to explain or describe your legal problem, issue, or dispute in your own words. However, this must come to a minimum word count of 100 to progress to the next stage.

You should provide as much information and detail on the circumstances that you are in and facing, as well as the problem and your concerns or queries in relation to it. Once you have entered 100 words the ‘Continue’ button will automatically activate for you to progress on.

Is the Legal Checker service confidential?

Yes, Legal Utopia takes appropriate steps to ensure that your account information and your use of the Legal checker service are separated. This means Legal Utopia cannot immediately match you to your use of the Legal Checker service.

The information you generate from your use of the Legal Checker service is your data and not Legal Utopia’s data. Legal Utopia will keep that information confidential and will not share it with undisclosed third parties.

Are there lawyers that look at the assessment in the Legal Checker service?

This is a new, transformative service that leverages machine learning technology. This way Legal Utopia can offer the service at an affordable price. As such, there is no human that assesses each individual use or output of the Legal Checker service.

What is legal guidance?

Legal Utopia provides a high-volume of precise legal guidance on a range of legal problems in a specific context that is common. Therefore, legal guidance is not written or provided on the basis of your particular legal problem but you may select a common legal problem based on your understanding of your legal problem.

Legal guidance should always be considered as a ‘direction’ on what you ‘could’ do in the context in which it is written and not what you necessarily ‘should’ do in your particular circumstances.

What areas of law does the Legal Checker service cover?

The Legal Checker can potentially assist a user across 9 of the most common consumer law practice areas of law, including but not limited to, family law, commercial law, contract law, intellectual property law, planning, property, and land law, data protection law, employment law, tax law, civil law, and corporate law.

How reliable is the Legal Checker service?

The Legal Checker service is, of course, a new way of delivering affordable legal support applying modern technologies. These technologies make a prediction based on probabilities, and not absolute certainty, this is why you must always select options that are correct to your precise circumstances and, whenever unsure, select the ‘No’ or ‘None of the above’ option.

Is the Legal Checker service free?

You can access the Legal Checker service for free with an individual account but you will need a subscription or credit to access the results if your problem is not pre-selected by Legal Utopia to be free.

You must purchase a subscription if you have a business account to use the Legal Checker service.

What does it mean when it says it’s identified my issue?

You will get access to a result that the Legal Checker has identified based on your input and selections. This means you may be able to access relevant guidance, solutions, services, and resources based on the identified problem.

If the Legal Checker cannot identify my legal problem, do I have to pay?

If you have an individual account you will not have to pay for the result if one is not located or you choose not to pay for access to the result. If you purchase a subscription, you will have unlimited access to continue using the Legal Checker service.

What happens to the results from when the Legal Checker service identifies my legal problem?

You will continue to have access to results from the Legal Checker service within the ‘Results’ page within your account. This will continue to be available for the lifetime of your account and you can always go back to the result later to pay for access.

If you have purchased access to the result you will continue to have access to it for the lifetime of the account or the duration of your subscription. This also includes updates and notifications if any of the result changes, for example, if the law changes and Legal Utopia updates the legal guidance.

What are resources?

You may be able to access a range of resources within any result from the Legal Checker service. Resources are made up of (1) websites, (2) guidance documents, and (3) contract templates; where available.

Can I access other content linked to my existing Legal Checker result?

Yes, as with any legal guidance content, there may be other areas of law or guidance that is relevant to your problem. Legal Utopia ‘links’ this legal guidance content and this is accessible from within the legal guidance option.

It says that my use of the Legal Checker failed or was incomplete, what does this mean?

This means that you either did not complete the full process required for the Legal Checker service to identify the legal problem, or your input or selections during the Legal Checker process did not match to any legal problem the service can identify at this time.

It says that my problem might qualify for legal aid, what should I do?

If the Legal Checker result notifies you that your legal problem may qualify for legal aid assistance, you should consider contacting the Legal Aid Agency for further support and assistance in assessing your financial eligibility to claim legal aid funding.

What are portals?

You may be able to access a range of portals that are relevant to your legal problem. Portals are online or digital applications that can assist you with different tasks, such as applying for planning permission or issuing a court claim,

How does Legal Utopia calculate the number of problems the Legal Checker service can support?

The Legal Checker service is trained on a range of practice areas of law and subareas of law, it then considers a range of unique characteristics to a range of unique legal problems. Legal Utopia calculates the number of unique legal problems by multiplying the different variable combinations to the number of unique legal problems; this provides the number of possible output combinations the Legal Checker could produce.

FIND A LAWYER

How do I find lawyers on the Find A Lawyer service?

Legal Utopia offers the Find A Lawyer service for free. It makes solicitors regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority easier to find based on different information that is generally important to prospective customers.

You can find these lawyers by opening the Find A Lawyer tab in our app dashboard and typing into the search bar your postcode or region to locate lawyers in your area.

You can then filter those searches by the area of law that those located lawyers practice in based on the legal problem you have.

Where does the information come from for the Find A Lawyer service?

Legal Utopia has an agreement with the Solicitors Regulation Authority to access public information on the businesses that are authorised and regulated by them. They are principally responsible for the professional standards of a specific type of lawyer called ‘Solicitors’.

Legal Utopia accesses this information from the Solicitors Regulation Authority’s register. When the register is updated, our Find A Lawyer updates; although this may not be instantaneous.

What can I do with the Find A Lawyer service?

Legal Utopia makes this information available and searchable to encourage and support the ‘shopping around’ of regulated solicitors. It helps you discover if there is a local solicitor to your home or work, as well as law firms with international reach depending on your needs.

When you select a legal business on the Find A Lawyer map, you can get direct access to their phone, email, and website, as well as information on their company structure, number, authorisation date, and areas of legal practice.

Are there any referral arrangements or interests that Legal Utopia has?

Legal Utopia has developed this service purely for the benefit of its users. We may provide individual firms displayed on the Find A Lawyer service which additional display features or an alternative display design in return for a membership fee.

How reliable is the information on the Find A Lawyer service?

Legal Utopia uses information from the Solicitors Regulation Authority to provide you with this service. As this is the regulator for solicitors and we only display information on SRA regulated legal business, the information may be considered reliable.

However, as with any information and business, things change. We aim to update the information within a reasonable time following the SRA making changes on their register.
